If a unit on the field loses all their HP, they will be KO'd; the Chunky Salsa rule is in effect, in that if a unit is KO'd for more than 50% of their base max HP, they will be immediately, permanently killed. KO'd units MAY be recovered for use in future battles, with some limitations.

KO'd units must be recovered within a set amount of turns, which depends on their Strength, Endurance, or Luck stats (whichever is highest). Most units must carry a KO'd unit back to a friendly space within a three-turn limit, at which point they will be evacuated from the battlefield. They will still be unusable in the next battle while they recover, but they will be usable again, albeit with minor penalties to stats. Medic-class units such as Helena and Sylviss are special, in that they have the ability to immediately evacuate a KO'd unit without needing to carry them, as long as the unit is not in Enemy territory (see Shantania/Area of Influence).

Story-critical units (outside of Lynia, whose defeat will end the game) may still be "killed" permanently, however they will remain alive for story purposes (their death is handled FE7-style, with the "it's not fatal!" excuse, but they will never be usable again, as the unit is permanently crippled, which is reflected in their portrait during dialogue segments). If too many (or a few specific) story-critical units are permanently KO'd, the ending will change.
