In 1974, Southtown martial artist Jeffrey Bogard was silenced by members of the Howard Syndicate, under orders of up and coming crime lord Geese Howard. He is survived by two young sons, Terry and Andy Bogard, both of whom swear their vengeance against Geese and his men. They are raised by Jeff's former master, Tung Fu Rue, before going their separate ways in search of their own justice - Andy joining the secretive Shiranui Clan, and Terry taking to the streets.

In 1991, the brothers finally find their "in": mutual friend Joe Higashi, kickboxing champion and one-time understudy of Jeff Bogard, informs them of a no-holds-barred, ultra-high stakes fighting tournament, sponsored by none other than Geese Howard. The brothers, and Joe, believe it is the best way to gain access to Howard, and thus, exact their justice on the man who killed their father.

But it will take much more than fighting skill to get that far.

GGG/Hungry Wolf is Southtown realized from the same perspective as the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, meshing all-out street brawls with open world role playing. Players alternate between Terry and Andy on separate but converging plotlines as both of them strive for vengeance. Characters from throughout the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting universes make appearances; this story follows the pre-King of Fighters timeline, with AOF presumed to take place in the 1970s, and FF being set in 1991.

Characters

Terry Bogard (Kazuhiro Nakaya/Kaiji Tang) corresponds to Ichiban Kasuga, a loud-mouthed but well-meaning man, who must start from rock bottom with only his street smarts and his hunger. He lives in the boxcar of a decommissioned train, in an old railyard near Tung Fu Rue's private dojo. In his story, he strives to prove himself worthy to enter The King of Fighters, while at the same time sustaining himself with menial jobs like pizza deliveries (where his jacket comes from, incidentally).

Andy Bogard (Kazuhiro Nakaya/Michael Rosenbaum) corresponds to Akira Nishikiyama, a steadfast and determined man presented with a golden opportunity for success, that risks losing it all over his own selfishness. He is courted by Master Shiranui's daughter Mai (Saeko Mukoda/Sumire Uesaka/Elizabeth Maxwell), but his own thirst for power and revenge risks not only jeopardizing his relationship, but disgracing both himself and the Shiranui Clan.

Gameplay

Terry and Andy have free roam of the major districts of Southtown and major areas represented in the Fatal Fury series, with Terry initially beginning near the railyard, adjoining alleyways, cafes, bars, and boardwalk, and Andy largely being constrained to the area near the Shiranui Clan compound and the adjoining "Eastville" neighborhood. In addition to fighting random encounters in the streets and alleys, they may choose to entertain themselves at a variety of arcades, pubs, restaurants, and other entertainment spots.

Battle

As a hybrid of the combat system seen in the Yakuza series, and in later entries of Fatal Fury, Terry and Andy fight with standard rush combos and finishers, as well as a number of context-sensitive Special Powers that can be executed when the Power Gauge has risen by at least one level. They also gain access to Potential Powers later on, which require more levels of the gauge, but can be devastating when used judiciously.

Minigames

  • Street Hoops - Terry can visit a back-alley basketball court, where he can join one-on-one pick-up games with the denizens of Southtown's low-rise district. Terry's unique martial arts training can be used here by channeling Potential Power into a Power Dunk.
  • Arm Wrestling - Place bets on matches or participate in them yourself - just watch out for cheaters!
  • Mahjong - Found on the upper VIP floor of the Pao Pao Cafe.
  • Pizza Delivery - Terry's day job, or what amounts to one. Any time Terry returns to his workplace, he is put on shift and tasked with delivering pizzas in a short amount of time before they get cold, evoking the "biza" quest in Yakuza 0 as well as the courier races in Ishin!.
  • NeoTurf Driving Range - Southtown's a little too packed to have a full golf course, but Terry and Andy can visit the driving range NeoTurf at any time to take part in a golf challenge.
  • 2020 Batting Cage - More than just a home run derby! Pit your batting skills against cyborgs and multi-armed pitching machines! Watch out for landmines! Or pick from the Baseball Stars challenges instead for a slightly less outlandish baseball experience.
  • Top Hunter - Throughout Southtown are notorious criminals with prices on their heads. Find them, defeat them, and bring them in, to make some money and possibly learn new skills.
  • Breakdance Battle - Most similar to the dance-offs from Yakuza 5 and 0, Terry can challenge local breakdance master Duck King (Zhao Tianyou/Nobuhiko Okamoto/Robbie Daymond) to a dance battle for fame and fortune.
  • Courtship - Andy may train and have conversations with Mai Shiranui (in a process similar to hostess clubs), a process which will either grant him new potential powers, earn him adoration, or end with him getting teased and/or beaten.
