The Space Pirate (TSP) is a gameplay modification for GZDoom by Blue Vertigo. The Space Pirate centered around the exploits of the titular space pirate Melody Crosswell and her journey through the demon-infested Phobos base in search of rare artifacts and other valuables. TSP focused heavily on melee combat as an evolution of the system originally featured in Agent Diaz: The Last Hours of Purity and featured a fully-voiced protagonist. Intended to be a side story within the Weaselverse, it canonically took place in between Agent Diaz: The Last Hours of Purity and Agent Hernandez. As of 2018, the Space Pirate was rebooted and now takes place within its own universe. This article is focused on the legacy version of TSP (unless otherwise noted).

Story

A New Breed of Pirate

With the regular travel between Earth and Mars, supplies, valuables, and other materials needed to be sent between the planets. This led to the emergence of companies that specialized in interplanetary shipment, which in turn created a new form of piracy - space piracy. Space pirates quickly established criminal empires based around the raiding and boarding of shipment vessels. Due to the high cost of operating spacefaring vessels and the ongoing need for repairs and maintenance, pirates formed guilds in order to coordinate their efforts.

Into Burning Space

At approximately 0900 hours, we intercepted a distress call from the UAC base on Phobos. From the video footage that has leaked to public airwaves, it looks like a teleporter experiment went awry, opening a portal to some hellish dimension. The entire base has been overrun with creatures from the other side of the portal, and both the Union Aerospace Military Division and reportedly the Research Crime Prevention Agency are doing their best to dispatch and rescue what remains of the personnel.

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect opportunity.

If you recall, the Martian Surface Excavation Unit discovered tablets and other artifacts left over by an ancient race called the "Praeleanthor". These would go for unprecedented amounts of money if we could somehow procure them, and amiss the chaos at Phobos, we would have the prime opportunity to retrieve them. Your objectives are simple:

  • Retrieve the Martian artifacts.
  • Assassinate any and all UAC and RCPA personnel. We need to keep our tracks clean.

"Good luck Mel."

Characters

Melody Crosswell

Of all the space pirate guilds, the Kei Pirates are usually considered to be the most notorious. Largely operating out of mainland China, these fearsome pirates have garnered a reputation for their efficient and ruthless methods of raiding vessels. One such pirate, Melody Crosswell (or simply "Mel" to those close to her), quickly rose to prominence in the guild. Raised by her mother, a highly-respected pirate captain, from an early age Mel learned the skills necessary to be a successful pirate. After her mother passed, Mel took her position as the new captain of the Indigo Skyline. Following a string of consecutive successful raids against armored UAC cargo vessels, Mel caught the eye of a man named Kris Vexler. Vexler was impressed by her resourcefulness and offered a series of lucrative jobs with an equally enticing payout. Her latest job might be her most dangerous yet however; a raid on the UAC base on Phobos.

After the UAC's teleporter experiment had gone catastrophically wrong, the base was flooded with horrific creatures from another dimension. The mass pandemonium and chaos make for the perfect opportunity to raid the base and steal rare Martian artifacts the UAC had been hiding away. Of course, stealing ancient artifacts is one thing, but battling otherworldly monsters is going to cost Vexler extra.

Kris Vexler

Connected to numerous underground and illicit activities, Vexler has been on the RCPA's most-wanted list for over ten years but has avoided capture. Even those who work closely with him have never met him in person, with Vexler communicating strictly via video conferencing.

Miriam Quaid

Miriam Quaid is the current CEO of the Union Aerospace Corporation, appointed in the year 2128. Quaid is responsible for the UAC's aggressive push towards space colonization, spearheading the Mars and Phobos colonization projects as well as overseeing the terraformation of Triton and Europa. Quaid's vision of the future pushed the UAC into becoming an even bigger corporate entity but also aided in allowing the UAC to pursue other endeavors, such as matter duplication and weapon research.

Brad B. Bradley

Brad B. Bradley was a professor of Economic Studies, teaching at Neo Mustang University located in Neo Mustang, Oklahoma. Bradley was most notably the voice and creator of what is now known as RECOVERED 023, a presentation that delved into the universal economy and the potential adoption of the global dollar currency. Bradley was last seen on the Phobos base on the day of the teleporter experiment failure, and his current status is unknown.

Reboot

In 2018, the Space Pirate was retooled from the ground up. The new version of the Space Pirate takes place in its own universe, entirely separate from the Weaselverse version of TSP. While some characters are shared between both versions of the story, their backgrounds, personalities, and roles may differ.
