The Creators

The Creators are a group of people from a highly advanced precursor civilization, having existed for longer than Shantania itself. They are a council of highly trained magician-scientists that have mastered space travel and time compression, and their Vessel travels the Known Universe in its eternal mission to sustain the flow of Life.

Heirarchy

The Creators are led by an elected Archmage, agreed upon by the rest of the Council. This page is pretty unfinished. Weasel plans to get to it eventually. Probably.

Creation of Worlds

The Creators' Vessel bears a reservoir of pure compressed Matter, which is expended via the Archmage's Orrery to create a World. Matter is extremely valuable to the Creators, since significant amounts of it are needed to create a World capable of sustaining Life. Once a sufficient World is built, a Life Spark is sent to it; if conditions are correct, this results in sustainable Life spreading across the World.

Matter can only be reclaimed from a World once its Life has expired; any other attempt to do so results in an unstable, uncontrolled detonation of the World, effectively wasting both Matter and Life. Therefore, Creating is a constant movement of planting and harvesting in order to prolong the Universe; one which Kasiell was at one point attempting to find a way to either automate or transcend.

Known Creators

  • Kasiell, a former Archmage, disgraced by his inferiors when it came to light that his experimental Worlds failed to bear fruit. A council of peers collectively decided to banish Kasiell to one of his own experimental worlds.
  • Gregor, Kasiell's immediate successor as Archmage, and eventually, the man who would (nearly) kill him.
  • Thayer, a Journeyman Creator known for his talents of prescience.
  • An unnamed Creator referred to elsewhere as Finder Prime.

Gregor's Gambit

The creators knew soon enough that they'd made a mistake in their banishment of the archmage Kasiell. He'd found his way to His Planet, on which he'd spent a portion of his own life force. Essentially, he'd tucked away a part of his existing power as the archmage of the Creators, for just such a contingency. The creators knew he'd try to find his way back to the guild, whether to regain his power or to take his revenge on the guild that had wronged him, so they planted some shreds of themselves on the planet.

The Finders were headed by a creator working undercover. Records were deliberately either not kept, or outright destroyed, to prevent Kasiell from identifying them. Holy Implements were made using highly advanced creator tech, the nature of which was so closely guarded a secret that no Finder Decisive past "Finder Prime" knows the truth.

The Wisemen's Guild were founded by Journeyman Thayer, who had always had a knack for understanding the whims of men. The nature of his foresight was known only to himself, among the Creators, but it was capable of being passed down to those worthy of it, so the Wisemen were created to find those who could leverage this foresight for the greater good.

Gregor Caynea was the largest influence, having gone to the planet himself to wield his powers as archmage against the man who so desperately wished to regain them. Kasiell had prepared himself, isolating himself from those creators who would have tried to thwart him, and managed to regain enough power that their legacies alone wouldn't have harmed him. Gregor, on the other hand, engaged in a gambit: to the masses of people the planet had borne, Gregor was but a traveler, but to Kasiell, he was still the archmage. His duel would have ended in a stalemate otherwise, but the Creators' Vessel itself would "open the sky" and kill Kasiell with a Matter beam. A costly approach, but the only one that'd work. Gregor would not be able to return to the vessel afterwards, but Kasiell would be gone. Or so he thought.

In the immediate aftermath, Gregor would be marked by The Finders, as their Decisive was furious at Gregor for recklessly going ahead with a risky plan to use the Vessel in an all-out attack. Gregor, on the other hand, was well aware of the cost such a gambit would incur: not only would the Vessel itself be severely weakened, as its Matter reservoir would be near depleted, but Gregor himself would be unable to return to the Vessel afterwards, for both logistical and political reasons. Thusly, Gregor consigned himself to the life of a "mortal," and as the populace of what was once Kasellia heralded him as their new King, Gregor would at least have a way to continue a Creator's bloodline.
