Weapons

Unlike Fire Emblem, weapons are not disposable items that break after X amount of uses. Most characters will have one "personal weapon" that never breaks. Instead of buying new weapons all the time and rendering the old ones obsolete, personal weapons can be taken to a blacksmith's shop (like Teah's wagon) and a modest sum of money may be spent on individual traits of the weapon to upgrade it. This is most similar to the weapon system in Suikoden, though it borrows elements from FE:Awakening's Forge system.

Stats that can be upgraded:

  • Power; affects weapon's raw damage (minus enemies' Defense stat, naturally).
  • Attack Accuracy, in increments of 5%.
  • Counter Accuracy, in increments of 5% (affects chance to dodge or counter-attack).
  • Critical hit chance, in increments of 3%.
  • Weight, affects how the weapon alters the wielder's Profile stat (see Shantania/Profile).

Some characters have weapons with unique traits. A character equipped with Javelins, for example, may attack at multiple ranges; this may affect which stat is dominant. Up close, the Javelin relies on Strength; at a distance, Skill determines its damage instead.

Some characters may also wield more than one weapon. A character that wields both a spellbook and a dagger, for example, can upgrade the two weapons individually. A character will only ever have two weapons or counter-weapons (one for each hand).

Counter Weapons

Counter-attacking is closer to a Front Mission game; characters can wield one weapon in each hand, except for two-handed weapons. When attacked during Enemy phase, you may choose to either attack with a weapon (thus, eating the damage in favor of attacking, assuming your character does not dodge) or use a Defensive weapon (like a shield) to attempt to nullify the damage. Heavy Knights may have better chance to use shields. Defensive weapons are also used to Team Defend. Since Counter-weapons count as weapons, a character may only carry up to two.

Examples

An enemy Rigan warrior is equipped with a Broad Axe and a Tower Shield. The Broad Axe is a typical Strength-based weapon with no special traits. The Tower Shield counts as a weapon, but cannot be attacked with. If attacked during Player Phase, the Rigan may select from either his Broad Axe or his Tower Shield as a counter. If he chooses the Broad Axe, his chance to not take damage is not affected, but he will be guaranteed a follow-up attack, even if he is hit. If he chooses the Tower Shield, his chance to nullify the damage is increased, but he will not get a follow-up attack, as the Tower Shield does not have an attack option.

For another example, a Caynean soldier wielding a Short Sword and a Buckler. The Buckler, being a lighter-weight shield, offers a special ability. If used to counter during an enemy attack, the Buckler may allow a parry-and-riposte; i.e. there is a small chance that blocking a blow with the Buckler will immediately allow the Soldier to attack with his Short Sword afterwards with a double chance to critical hit.

As a final example, Lynia's Quarterstaff is again a special case. If Lynia is attacked during Enemy Phase, she has the option to use her staff to Attack or Defend, with similar effects to the Rigan warrior's axe and shield.

Not all standard weapons can be used to defend. Weapons that fall under this category include Brenick's Bullwhip, Ravi's Combustion Bow, and Teah's Hammer.
