Career and Education

Richard Crowley was drafted for the Vietnam War as part of the United States Air Force in the later part of the 1960s. During his time in the Air Force, he rose to the rank of Airman First Class. His military career from that point forward is poorly documented until his death in 1969. Officially, Crowley was shot in the back while on leave by a Viet Cong guerrilla. In reality, he was shot by a superior officer in the USAF, from whom Richard had stolen personal effects and was impersonating since arriving in Vietnam. The case of personal effects sent home included, due to a mix-up, said superior officer's jacket, US Marine chevrons from a completely unrelated deceased person that was unable to be identified, and an "honorable discharge" certificate, modified with a pen to read "DIShonorable." The truth of Richard Crowley's death is known only to the USAF and to his wife Julia, who received the notice and subsequently kept it secret from the rest of her family. Despite Richard's dishonesty, Bastion is led to believe Richard was killed under less horrible circumstances. He is only told the truth in Case 5.
